got milk?

Milk, milk, milk. Such is the life of ol' Bessie: Her udders and her calf. After two months of nursing and pumping I certainly feel like a milk cow...and poor ol' Bessie just had a bout with a very sore udder (clogged milk ducts). Even after two months, Landon still doesn't quite have the hang of nursing. He operates in two modes; asleep and not getting enough or fighting and frantic where he chomps rather than sucks and cries and pulls off more times than I can count and manages to scratch me all over with his tiny fingernails. Oy vay! For the past few days I have been just pumping and giving him breastmilk in a bottle to let myself heal up a little bit. It is a lot of extra work finding enough time to pump all the milk he needs, feeding him, quieting him in his fussy times and getting him to sleep and then cleaning everything - just in time to start the process all over again. But I have to say, it is a lot less stressful and painful. I really would like for him to get all of the benefits from breastmilk (especially because of his prematurity) but I am beginning to think that he is just not capable of nursing like a full term baby.

Breastfeeding does get easier. I remember the first 3 months were SO hard with Connor that I started pumping and feeding him from bottles for a couple of weeks and then we went back to the boob. It seemed to work for us and we nursed for 13 months. I never believed that it would get better, but it finally did and then it was cake. Hang in there! Landon is so cute and I love the name!
